CV Gavin graduated from the Faculty of Law, University College, Dublin in 1981, Bachelor of Civil Law. After an apprenticeship he qualified as a solicitor in Northern Ireland in 1984, and the Republic of Ireland in 1985. He has a wide and varied practice. He specialises in High Court litigation, attending courts the High Court in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. He acts for Defendants in a wide range of cases, including major injury incidents and commercial disputes.

He represented the Defendant in the High Court action of Begley –v- Milligan, which was one of the largest personal injury actions ever taken in the Republic of Ireland. The case was settled on the second day of trial for IR£3.2 (€4.0) million.

He acted in the Defendant in the action of Caskey –v- Tawia, which resulted in the first structured settlement before the Northern Ireland High Court.

He acted in one of the first actions to be taken through the Commercial Division of the High Court in Northern Ireland, successfully defending the case of Gillespie & Wilson Limited –v- GRE.

Gavin continues to represent clients in both High Courts in Dublin and Belfast today.

He also deals with many other areas of Commercial and General practice such as:

  • Commercial and Domestic Conveyancing, Commercial Leases, Landlord and Tenant
  • Drafting Wills, advising on IHT and Probate
  • Corporate Manslaughter and Health & Safety at Work
  • Waste Management and Environmental Law
  • Company Purchases and Sales

He is a member of the Forum of Insurance Lawyers. He has completed the Advocacy Course presented by the Institute for Professional Legal Studies at Queen’s University, Belfast. He lectures annually to the students at the Institute for Professional Legal Studies on High Court procedure.

When he is not spending time with his wife Aideen and their three daughters, he enjoys playing the guitar. A keen member of the Foyle Cycling Club, he has participated in a number of Granfondo Cyclosportivs, and recently cycled from Mizen Head to Malin Head, raising money for the Foyle Hospice.
