Adoption is a legal process in which parental responsibility is transferred to the adopters.
When an Adoption Order is made, an adopted person is treated in law as if he or she were the child of the adopter(s). The two main types of adoption application are:
• An application by a parent or step-parent.
• An application by a Health & Social Services
Trust to “free” a child for adoption with or without parental consent.
If you are a parent, step-parent or foster parent thinking of adopting; or if you are the parent of a child and have received notice from your local Health & Social Services Trust of its intention to apply to Court to free your child for adoption, then you will want to know your legal rights.

For example, in 2006/2007, the High Court in Northern Ireland has not been slow in applying Articles 6 and 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (which guarantees the right to a fair trial and the right to a family life) in refusing applications by Trusts to free children for adoption without parental consent.
